Abstract
Second language learning relies not only on the mastery of vocabulary and grammar but also on the learner's ability to adapt to the culture associated with the target language. Research on BIPA (Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers) has predominantly focused on cognitive dimensions, whereas affective dimensions specifically emotional intelligence (EI) have received relatively limited attention. This study aimed to examine how the emotional intelligence of Chinese BIPA students manifested during their adaptation to the Indonesian language and culture, employing a positive discourse analysis (PDA) approach. A qualitative case study design was used, involving 17 BIPA students from Jilin International Studies University participating in a two-semester exchange program in Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth, text-based interviews conducted via WeChat. While interviews were primarily conducted in Indonesian, participants were permitted to use their native language if they encountered difficulties understanding questions or expressing their experiences; the data were subsequently analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis and Martin and White’s (2005) appraisal system. The results indicate that emotional intelligence manifests through Goleman’s five dimensions: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. The PDA analysis reveals a reconstructive narrative pattern in which experiences of cultural disorientation, discomfort, and communication difficulties are imbued with new meaning through reflection and adaptive actions. However, this pattern is neither uniform nor linear, as there are cases that qualify the dominant trend. These findings suggest that emotional intelligence functions as an interpretive and adaptive resource, enabling participants to make sense of cross-cultural experiences, manage emotional responses, and build more adaptive relationships with the Indonesian linguistic and cultural environment.
