Abstract

Beginner-level BIPA learners require opportunities for repeated and controlled oral production; however, primary textbooks do not always provide sufficient spaces for structured speaking practice. This study developed and preliminarily evaluated Bersuara Lewat Drama (Speaking Through Drama), a mini-drama-based speaking supplement aligned unit-by-unit with the 2019 edition of Sahabatku Indonesia BIPA 1. This study employed the ADDIE model, which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. During the analysis phase, ten units of the primary textbook were examined based on communicative objectives, interaction, contextualization, oral production opportunities, and media support. The developed product consists of ten mini-drama units supported by QR-code-based audio and staged activities ranging from reading, listening, repetitive practice, and role-playing. The product was evaluated by two expert validators with expertise in BIPA instruction and Indonesian language education. The validation results indicated generally positive evaluations regarding content suitability, cultural relevance, media design, and usability, while critical feedback identified areas requiring refinement, particularly language naturalness, linguistic complexity, dialogue consistency, and audio-script alignment. Qualitative feedback was analyzed thematically and translated into revision decisions. The findings provide preliminary evidence that the product is viable as a controlled speaking practice supplement; however, this study does not demonstrate improvement in learners’ actual speaking proficiency. The contribution of this study lies in operationalizing unit-by-unit curricular alignment as a design principle and demonstrating how validator differences can function as diagnostic information for improving supplementary BIPA materials.
